    What is Maccy?

Maccy is a free, open-source clipboard manager for macOS that quietly records everything you copy and gives it back in milliseconds. Hit one keyboard shortcut, start typing, press Enter—that snippet, link, or image you copied an hour ago is pasted exactly where you need it. No bloated dashboards, no AI assistants nobody asked for, no monthly fees.

    Why people pick Maccy

Six reasons power users switch and never look back.

    Zero fluff, ruthless focus

Other clipboard managers bury the basics under snippet libraries and paywalls. Maccy is the opposite philosophy — one job, done well.

    Built for speed

Summon the window, fuzzy-search thousands of entries, and paste — all in a fraction of a second. Nothing pulls you out of flow.

    Keyboard before mouse

Every action — open, search, pin, delete, paste-as-plain-text — has a keyboard shortcut. Your hands never leave the home row.

    Private by default

Your clipboard never touches a server. Maccy honours the concealed flag set by 1Password and Bitwarden, so secrets are dropped automatically.

    Genuinely native

Written in Swift on top of native AppKit controls. It looks like macOS because it is macOS — no Electron wrapper, no surprises.

    Open source, forever free

Released under the permissive MIT licence. Audit it, fork it, ship it inside your company. No vendor lock-in, ever.

    Install in under a minute

Four steps from download to first paste.

    Download

    Move to Applications

Drag Maccy into the Applications folder and launch it once. A small icon appears quietly in the menu bar — that is the entire UI footprint.

    Approve Accessibility access

macOS asks once for Accessibility permission so Maccy can paste into the frontmost app. Approve it in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

    Press C

Type a few characters to filter your history, press Return to paste. Hold on Return to paste without formatting. Done.

    Who actually uses Maccy?

If you copy and paste on a Mac, Maccy is for you.

    Developers

Cycle between error messages, stack traces, commit hashes, and snippets without Cmd-Tabbing. Pairs perfectly with your terminal and IDE.

    Writers & journalists

Keep quotes, sources, and URLs on tap while drafting. The pin feature works as a tiny scratchpad for the day’s reusable phrases.

    Designers

Copy hex codes, layer names, and assets across Figma, Sketch, and the browser. Maccy preserves rich text and images, so nothing degrades on paste.

    Customer support & sales

Pin canned replies and product links you use every day. Smash out responses without ever opening a snippets app.

    Students & researchers

Collect citations, formulas, and references from a long session and replay them into your notes with one keystroke each.

Anyone who copies twice a day

If you have ever overwritten something important by copying something else, Maccy already paid for itself — and it cost nothing.

    Privacy, in plain English

Clipboard contents are some of the most sensitive data on your machine — passwords, two-factor codes, private messages. Maccy treats them accordingly: nothing leaves your Mac unless you opt into iCloud sync, in which case Apple’s end-to-end encryption carries the data between your own devices. There is no analytics SDK, no crash reporter that ships clipboard text, and no advertising identifier.

Maccy automatically ignores clipboard entries marked as concealed by password managers, recognises transient pasteboards used by macOS itself, and lets you blocklist any application from being recorded. For corporate deployments, an MDM-friendly configuration profile pins history depth and disables sync centrally.

    What people say

Rated 4.9 / 5 from 986 reviews on the Mac App Store.

Maccy is hands down the best clipboard manager I’ve ever used, across all platforms. As a writer by profession, I cannot function effectively without a clipboard manager. Most apps I tried were bloated and demanded unnecessary permissions — Maccy is lean, clean, and yet packed with everything I actually need.

If you want a clipboard manager with a modern, restrained UI you should check out Maccy. It is very simple and has a minimal system footprint, but it gets the job done — and crucially, it is free, lightweight and open source.

About two weeks into using Maccy I realised I could not do without it — not just as a clipboard manager, but as a minimalist note-taker and a safety net against silly mistakes. It stays out of the way, is super fast, and does exactly what it needs to.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is Maccy?

Maccy is a free, open-source clipboard manager for macOS. It stores everything you copy and lets you paste any previous entry by pressing one keyboard shortcut and searching the history. It runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel Macs, requires macOS 14 or later, and stores all data locally.

How do I access my full copy-paste history on Mac?

macOS only remembers the most recently copied item natively. To access a full copy-paste history you need a clipboard manager like Maccy. Once installed, every item you copy is recorded automatically. Press C to open the history, type to filter, press Return to paste.

    Is Maccy really free?

Yes. Maccy is fully free and open-source under the MIT license. There are no paid tiers, no subscriptions, and no upsells. You can optionally tip the developer through Buy Me a Coffee, but nothing is gated behind payment.

Does Maccy send my clipboard data anywhere?

No. Every byte of your clipboard history lives in a local database on your Mac and never leaves it. The only network feature is optional iCloud sync — when enabled, your history is synchronised between your own signed-in Macs using Apple’s end-to-end encryption.

Will Maccy save passwords from my password manager?

Maccy honours the concealed clipboard flag set by 1Password, Bitwarden, Apple Passwords and similar tools, so credentials are excluded automatically. You can also blocklist individual apps in Settings → Ignore.

    What macOS version is required?

Maccy 2.7.3, released 28 November 2025, runs on macOS Sonoma 14 and later, on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Older system versions can use the legacy archive of previous builds.

Can I sync clipboard history between Macs?

Yes — turn on iCloud sync in Settings and your pinned items and recent history will follow you to every Mac you are signed into.

How is Maccy different from Pastebot or Paste?

Maccy is deliberately narrow: a fast, searchable history and nothing else. It does not do snippet expansion, shared workspaces, or AI rewriting. It is also open source and free, where the popular alternatives charge a one-time fee or subscription.

    Does Maccy work offline?

Always. Maccy has no required network connection. Drop it on an air-gapped Mac and everything except iCloud sync still works perfectly.

Can I change the keyboard shortcut?

Yes — the default summon is C, but every shortcut is independently rebindable in Settings → Hotkeys.
