Maccy missing from the menu bar
Maccy lives in the menu bar, so if the icon is gone it can feel like the app vanished. Usually it is still running — the icon is just not visible. Here is how to bring it back.
1. Launch Maccy
Open Maccy from the Applications folder or via Spotlight. If it was simply not running, the icon returns immediately. Set it to start automatically in System Settings → General → Login Items so this does not recur.
2. Your menu bar is too crowded
On Macs with a notch, macOS hides menu-bar icons that do not fit — and Maccy’s can be the one pushed off. Quit a few other menu-bar apps, or remove some icons, to make room. Widening available space often reveals Maccy again.
3. A menu-bar manager is hiding it
If you use a menu-bar organiser (such as Bartender, Ice, or Hidden Bar), Maccy’s icon may be tucked into the hidden section. Open that tool’s settings and move Maccy to the always-visible area.
4. Confirm it is alive in Activity Monitor
Open Activity Monitor and search for “Maccy.” If it is listed, the app is running and the icon is merely hidden (see steps 2–3). If it is not listed, it is not running — relaunch it.
5. Still no icon? Reinstall
Quit Maccy, move it to the Trash, and reinstall the latest version from the download page. Your history in ~/Library/Application Support/Maccy is preserved. If the icon disappeared right after a macOS update, also see Maccy not working after a macOS update.
For other issues, the troubleshooting guide covers the rest.
Why Maccy disappears from the menu bar
There are three common reasons Maccy is not visible in your menu bar after you have installed and launched it:
- Hidden by macOS menu bar overflow. macOS automatically hides menu bar items when there are too many to fit on screen. This is the most common cause — Maccy is running but invisible.
- Maccy is not actually running. The app may have quit silently after a crash, a permissions error, or a system update reset.
- Show in menu bar setting is disabled. A preference inside Maccy controls whether the icon appears.
Fix 1: Maccy is hidden by menu bar overflow
On Macs with a notch (MacBook Pro 14", 16") or with many menu bar apps, macOS hides items that don’t fit. Maccy may be running but invisible.
Temporary fix: Hold Cmd and drag other menu bar icons to the right to make space. Maccy should reappear.
Permanent fix — use Bartender 5 or Ice: These apps let you manage menu bar item visibility. Ice is free and open source at https://github.com/jordanbaird/Ice. Bartender 5 is paid (~$16). Both let you control exactly which items are shown.
On macOS Tahoe: Right-click on the menu bar when no windows are active → select Customise Menu Bar. You can reorder and unhide items directly.
Fix 2: Relaunch Maccy
If Maccy is not running at all:
- Open Spotlight (⌘Space)
- Type Maccy
- Press Return to launch it
You should see the Maccy icon (a clipboard) appear in your menu bar. If you still don’t see it, proceed to Fix 3.
Fix 3: Enable “Show in menu bar”
- Launch Maccy from Applications (even if you don’t see the icon)
- Look for Maccy in your Dock (it may appear there temporarily)
- Click the Maccy icon in the Dock to open it
- Go to Maccy → Preferences → General
- Make sure Show Maccy in menu bar is checked
Fix 4: Check that Maccy launches at login
To prevent this from happening again:
- Open Maccy Preferences → General
- Enable Launch at login
This ensures Maccy starts automatically every time your Mac boots. You should never need to manually launch it again.
Fix 5: Reinstall Maccy
If none of the above works, the Maccy installation may be corrupted:
- Drag
Maccy.appfrom Applications to Trash - Empty Trash
- Download the latest version from maccymanager.com/download
- Install and launch
Your clipboard history is stored separately in ~/Library/Application Support/Maccy and will survive the reinstall.
Prevention: manage menu bar clutter
The root cause for many “Maccy is missing” reports is simply too many menu bar items. Beyond Bartender/Ice, consider auditing which apps you actually need in the menu bar. Most apps with menu bar icons have an option to hide them — check each app’s preferences.
